Income Distribution in Rural and Urban Areas of Iran (1363-1386)

Abstract

This study aims to determine income distribution in rural and
urban areas of Iran during 1987-2007 periods. The family cost of living
data which gathered by Statistical Center of Iran were used to calculate
the changes of income distribution in the urban and rural areas of the
country. For this purpose, various measures such as Gini coefficient,
Theil index and Atkinson coefficient were utilized. Findings of the study
indicated that income inequality decreased during the period of study
steadily. Also it is concluded that income distribution in rural areas was
more unequal and fluctuating compare to urban areas. On this basis, it is
recommended that more emphasis must be placed on rural areas in
development plans
