Estimation of Long Run Demandfor Protein Products in Iran

Abstract

    With respect to increasing demand for protein products in the process of development, this paper aims to estimate long run demand for Eggs, Chicken and red Meat with the usage of time series data for period of 1988-2012. In order to estimate mentioned demand functions, Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model has been used. The results of long run income elasticity for Egg and Chicken (0.76 and 0.52 respectively) showed that these products were necessary in Iranian household consumption basket. But red meat with 2.44 long run income elasticity was a luxury product. Long run estimated cross elasticity coefficient (7.75) also indicated that red Meat and Chicken were substitute products.
